1. Upstairs rooms run hot in summer
The bedrooms bake while downstairs is fine. The attic sits right above them with too little between. This is the number one sign.
2. Cold rooms in winter
Same attic, opposite season. Heat escapes through the thin spots. Rooms far from the thermostat suffer most.
3. Bills that keep climbing
Your usage has not changed but the bills rise. The HVAC runs longer to make up for what the attic loses.
4. You can see the joists
Look in the attic. If the wood framing shows through the insulation, you are far short of full depth.
5. Uneven temps room to room
One bedroom is fine, the next is freezing. Thin or patchy insulation creates hot and cold zones.
6. Ice at the roof edge
Heat escaping through the attic melts roof snow. It refreezes at the cold eave. Those ice ridges point straight at thin insulation.
7. The system never stops
Your AC or furnace runs almost nonstop in extreme weather. It is fighting a leak it cannot win.
